The Latina Dance Project (LDP) will premiere The Slumber of Reason . The creative springboard for this work is Spanish painter Francisco de Goya’s prints, Los Caprichos. “Capricho” can be translated as a “whim,” a “fantasy or an expression of imagination.” In Goya’s use of the term for this series of prints, however, the meaning refers to a ironical cover of humor over one of the most profound indictments of human vice ever set on paper.
Enigmatic and controversial, Los Caprichos was created in a time of economic crisis and social unrest in Spain. Goya used his art as a powerful weapon to denounce social abuses and superstitions. Los Caprichos was a passionate declaration of his political liberalism and his revulsion towards ignorance and intellectual oppression.
Los Caprichos deals with such themes as the Spanish Inquisition, the corruption of the church and the nobility, witchcraft, and the stupidity and ignorance of the populace. Its subhuman cast includes witches, goblins, monks, aristocrats, prostitutes, and animals acting like human fools. These characters populate a world on the margins of reason, where no clear boundaries distinguish reality from fantasy. LDP will use these powerful images to create a new set of modern day “caprichos” exploring contemporary demons that affect our world ranging from the darkest to the most absurdly humorous, including immigration, environmental degradation, racism and technological alienation. Following Goya’s example, LDP brandishes humor as a tool of social criticism. A series of ten vignettes explore our contemporary superstitions and social abuses using movement, text (spoken and sung) and a visually recreating Goya’s world and the Caprichos through a stunning and haunting video montage.
LDP is a group of four nationally recognized Latina dance artists that explore the unique, dynamic and passionate voices of the hybrid cultures of Mexico, the United States and Brazil. They are a unique company because none of these Latinas live in the same city but are brought together by their passion to work as an equal collaborative company. The members are; Licia Perea, a COLA and two time NEA Fellow (LA, CA); Juanita Suarez, PHD, recipient of MAP Fund, Berolzheimer Foundation (Brockport, NY); Eva Tessler, multiple recipient from the AZ Comm. of the Arts (Tucson, AZ) and Eluza Santos, PHD, United Arts Council of NC (Vitoria, Brazil). The company was founded in 2002 as the rising voice of a new aesthetic in contemporary dance-theater, having toured nationally and internationally since its inception. LDP is joined by guest collaborators: acclaimed director - Tim Perez (Vancouver, BC); costumes - Susie Cox (Dallas, TX) and by critically acclaimed Los Angeles artists Wes Hambright-composer and Jose Garcia Davis-video and performer.
