The age requirements of dance
Hello, I am a sixteen year old who has never taken any type of dance class in my whole life. I am starting jazz class next week. But I just discovered my passion. My question is, is it still possible for me to be a professional dancer? I do not know all the ballet techniques. Can I still be what I want to be, or is it too late? I dance on my own and street dance (hip-hop). Thank you so much and please do not be afraid to be honest. I am ready to hear if it is too late, as much as it may pain me.

Hello Rebekah,
It is never too late to dance! Usually the age requirements are regarding ballet. A lot of traditional ballet companies like to train dancers very young. But for the modern companies of today you are just fine! As a matter of fact, a Balanchine ballerina named Melissa Hayden started when she was 16 – and made it as prima ballerina. She was phenomenal and started late for ballet. You are very young and can certainly make it as a dancer, the only thing that will hold you back, would be lack of practice and persistence! So go for it with all your might and push forward with your passion. If it is in your heart then it is in the stars.
