Dance Company Audition Preparation

Dear Dancehelp,
I'm trying out for my studio's dance company next year and I need some advice on how to practice all of the things I need help on. i'm not sure how to prepare myself.
Maria

Hello Maria,
It's good you are thinking this far in advance about your dance goal. During this next year you need to focus on technique, flexibility, diet and cardiovascular health. I suggest you take class 5 to 6 times a week for at least 2 hours a day. Make sure that you focus on the specific disipline you are going to try out for (i.e. ballet, modern etc). Concentrate on your diet by drinking a lot of water and eating mainly lean proteins and vegetables. You want to stay lean but you want to eat for maximum performance (see article 'Eating for Performance' under the Dance Nutrition category).
Also make sure you dedicate at least an hour or two to stretching each day. If you are really serious about dance you have to put in the time, effort and commitment that it takes to train your body. If you focus and dedicate yourself, you will do your uttmost best in the auditions. If you have time to spare with all this dancing, I also suggest adding in a small gym routine for cardiovascular health. Try running or taking aerobic classes. If you increase your activity as much as I suggest, make certian your diet supports it. You need a lot of protein, iron, water and fiber/vegetables. When you increase your cardio health you also increase your endurance to dance your best for long amounts of time, and that's what is required of a dancer in a company.
Another thing to do, is observe that particular company style. Go to all shows, observe their best dancers - mimic the company style and get the teachers to notice your hard work and improvement. I know you can do it Maria, make it happen!
Thanks and happy dancing,
