Achieving a tight fifth position
|
|
Dear Dancehelp,
When I stand in fifth position, I am not turned out all the way or when i do tendu to the side and close in fifth position, I cant seem to turn out all the way. How can I make it better?
Thank you!
Mariana

Hi Mariana,
Fifth position is something that cannot be forced. What I suggest is to work very hard on your turn-out (see article: The Turnout ). Also, you can turn your feet out from the ankle to make your fifth tighter. You need to pull up out of your hips during barre and to stretch your turn out as much as you can. A great fifth position is one of the most difficult positions to master - keep trying very hard to concentrate on the turnout and to work through your tendu very strongly. You need to rotate your hips out, and turn out your feet more. Make sure your foot is aligned with your knee though - this is important. An injury is not worth a tight fifth. Also, not eveyone can physically acheive a tight fifth. If your body does not then you need to accept it and work with your most comfortable fifth! You will improve with a lot of hard work and time. Just continue to take class as much as possible and focus on your turn-out.
Thanks and happy dancing!
