Dance Hiatus

Most dancers run into a period of time where life doesn’t allow dance. This is frustrating for the passionate dancer because it throws us out of the loop and we lose that fine tuned technique we worked so hard for…When it’s time to take a break from dance it’s time. Let’s face it, the dance world is demanding and sometimes it comes with as many cons as pros.
We try to push through and continue on with our studies but sometimes a dancer needs to take a hiatus. A break is actually good for a dancer sometimes – a few months off can not only rejuvenate but it can also revive the body! It also can freshen the mind and bring everything back into perspective. It’s hard to continuously dance – we sometimes lose who we are outside of it. This doesn’t make for good creative energy!

Dancers must also sometimes take a hiatus due to injuries; whether it’s a sprain, break or from general overuse such as severe tendentious or the like. Serious dancers most often over-work themselves as dance requires it a lot of the time! The endless rehearsals, the classes, the shows… It can really weigh on a dancer’s body!
We need to think of our health first and foremost - more then our status as a dancer. Without health we are nothing! The demands on a dancer are high. Every dancer deserves a hiatus sometimes – we are entitled to a break and a moment to live life and revive! Our spirit is what makes our dancing great – if it’s stifled then there is nothing to give.
Another aspect of the hiatus is the return to dance! Some dancers have taken quite a long one. Maybe we decided to quit due to not making ends meet financially and had to spend our days and hours working at a more lucrative employment position!

There are many ways a dancer gets pulled from their passion. Life is just that way. But when we decide to return it can be an intimidating experience. Not only did you leave, you also are behind on your technique, maybe other students advanced beyond you that you were on par with before…
And maybe you are worried you will ‘forget’ how to do it! The only answer to that is to get back to that barre and work hard and humbly. If you’ve done it once you'll do it again - your muscle has memory! Don’t ever let your dance hiatus take you away from your passion – once a dance always a dancer!
